Be sure to play with the sharpen and contrast options (those were available in 1980s implementations, too) to chose the best dithering of a particular image. This app is useful for modern graphic artists either by combining its output with other layers in Photoshop (or other bitmap graphics programs that support layers) or preparing an image for print using this instead of a normal PostScript halftone. Tinrocket’s website has a direct comparison between this and Photoshop’s diffusion dither. For those not familiar with its output, the screen shot here on the app store is not the best example. HyperScan and the excellent Atkinson dithering routine were subsequently unavailable for many years-but not forgotten!įrom Tinrocket, award-winning creator of apps to inspire creativity: Waterlogue, This by Tinrocket, and Olli by Tinrocket.Īs someone who has had a Mac at home since the original 128k in 1984 and also used ThunderScan (which was where Bill’s algorithm was first used), i love this simple, well-designed app. Later, this graphics routine was implemented as an option in Apple’s HyperScan software, connecting early Macs to flatbed scanners, and nowhere else. In the early 1980s, while developing the graphics technology for the first Macintosh, Bill Atkinson (HyperCard, QuickDraw, MacPaint) discovered a very elegant filter to convert greyscale image data for display on the Mac's 1-bit black-and-white screen. The visual effect produced by this technique creates rich, velvety tones, and is higher-quality than the “Diffusion Dither” method offered by Photoshop. Don't forget to set the PPI to 70 when you export the file.īelow are a few examples I pulled from the web, cropped and resized, and then converted using Retro Dither. You will need to crop and size your image to 400x240 70 PPI before dragging into Retro Dither.I would encourage anyone using a Mac to give it a shot. Most conversion apps default to 72 PPI and do not have anyway to adjust this. I am proud to say that there is an app on the App Store that will now export an image to BMP format! Not only that, it will allow you to chose a DPI setting when exporting. He responded and was very positive with my feedback and requests. I contacted the developer and made some suggestions. Still, I found the lack of a true BMP export to be puzzling and too cumbersome.Įnter Retro Dither. I eventually had this as part of my workflow before entering Photoshop for the final conversion. HyperDither was mentioned here before and I gave it a whirl. I searched the App Store for an app that would dither and export to BMP. I then tried Gimp and was disappointed with the results. Photoshop can do an "okay" job on certain photos, but for the vast majority of the photos I was choosing and converting it was not good enough. Photoshop was my only real way to create a BMP file suitable for the DM42. This lead down a deep rabbit hole and exposed a serious problem for those of us on macOS. I have been creating a lot of OFFIMG lately.
